A beach of sweat

The above cartoon shows a beach constructed within the palms of a man. Should we view this cartoon literally, it certainly does not make sense, since it is implausible to build a beach within our palms. A message is hidden in this cartoon, relating to the “beach” as a result of global warming. Here, the “beach” refers to perspirations as a result of the blazing sun. Global warming caused by the emission of large amounts of greenhouse gases led to an increase in global temperatures and this “beach” of sweat was formed. Global warming, as its name suggests, is a sign of globalization where its impact does not exempt any one nation.

The effects of global warming are varied and significant. Global warming, a consequence of greenhouse effect, refers to an average increase in the Earth’s temperature, which in turn causes changes in climate. This increment in temperature may cause changes in rainfall patterns, a rise in sea levels and a wide range of impacts on biodiversity. The IPCC has predicted that global warming will cause the melting of Alpine glaciers, increased river flooding, more deaths from heat strokes and the spread of malaria in Europe. Here, we see how global warming does not simply exist as a single environmental issue but spirals into social, economic, political and health problems too. Increased river flooding can cause social troubles such as poverty, starvation and homeless residents; this in turn, has a significant impact on the economy as the standards of living of affected nationals are affected. Global warming is a major matter which does not simply end off with environmental repercussions but spins off into influencing other sectors in a country as well.

The ecological impacts resulting from global warming supports the degree of importance of the problem and seeks international awareness. Globalization can function as a source of salvation of the world, as exemplified in the article above. EU and G8 ministers have gathered in Berlin to discuss energy efficiency measures, in a bid to reduce the effects of global warming on a global scale. The European Union’s decision to crush 10,000 incandescent light bulbs serves as a signal to G8 countries that Europe is bent on improving the environmental situation. Although this action seems as extravagant, it acts as a platform for further movements by other countries to be involved in the “energy revolution” mentioned in the previous post. It educates both the public and nations of the elevating significance and status of global warming in today’s context. Greenpeace, an international non-governmental organization, provides a gateway for countries to be engaged in this global project. It echoes the voice of our fragile earth by gathering countries to protect the natural environment and reduce the unfavorable consequences of climate change by implementing conservation rules. Europe’s act of crushing energy wasting light bulbs advocates others to follow suit and displays her strict intent in meeting carbon dioxide reduction commitments. When one nation decides to do her part for our environment, others are urged to do so as well. Europe has definitely presented itself as a worthy contributor by instigating an immediate ban on incandescent light bulbs. Without globalization, unity between nations in solving and facing this problem would be unattainable and the situation exemplified in the cartoon may develop.

The cartoon above offers a futuristic perception of life, should man persist in conquering and dominating his environment. Despite having embellished the situation, it stresses on the mounting importance of global warming on our surroundings, without drawing borders between countries. Indeed, globalization has allowed the world to view the harsh reality of our environment and strive in cracking the concerns.
