my reflections

Piracy is on the go, not only in Singapore but worldwide. It mainly consists of downloading music, movies or tv shows online. p2p software is one of the most commonly used software for illegal downloading. It is actually a peer to peer software, whereby one can upload a movie for instance and other people using the same software can download the movie which the person has uploaded. p2p software has been used as a platform for illegal downloading, but the purpose of this software when it was created was not for illegal downloading. This is when technology brings disadvantages in. It is created for a good purpose, but in the end it was abused for illegal uses. p2p is not the only example that i can give, youtube is another one. Youtube is a widely known website for its conveniece to share videos on it but it is also being illegally used to upload tv series, movies. Computers can be easily used to duplicate copies of music or movies also.

Technology helps us in many ways, but does it also bring consequences too? It can be argued that piracy already exist a long time ago, even when technology was not very advanced yet. However, at that time, the problem of piracy was not as serious as it is now. People had to even wait for illegal pirated cd sellers to sell their cds along the streets so that they can buy them but now, we can easily download from the internet and we need not even spend on pirated cds. The blame cannot be put on technology though, because afterall it is still ourselves to decide if we want to do the right thing. We must use technology wisely and not abuse them.
